Approach

The approach for Citizen was simple: Reworking the iconic elements of the Uptown location and creating a space with the same effect. We looked at our original design and pinpointed the aspects that were best received and became special to this precedent. The aim was to apply these to the new space while creating fresh design opportunities in tune with the evolving nightlife scene.

Outcome

The gabled roof of the previously redeveloped residential shell was a unique feature we wanted to apply to the new location. The main entry is a modern take on this silhouette. A central window on this street-facing brick façade gives a glimpse into the enclosed exterior patio. On one side a niched entry corridor leads from an open-air interior to a dark interior full of colored LED lighting throughout; a small glimpse of what's to come. The corridor is filled with full-height glass display cases showcasing gold champagne bottles and ornate framed mirrors floating away from the wall they line; all backlit and washed with neon lighting in rose and purple shades. The interior main space continues the ambient neon lighting throughout. A room glowing in the same purple and pink hues that bleeds onto the bar front design. Grounding the space is a timber beam grid all wrapped in dark wood tones. Wrapping the main walls of the club space is a detailed floral wallcovering further accented by the glowing ambient lighting. The bar spans the full width of a perimeter wall, clad in a high gloss, modern subway tile that reflects the lighting while the antiqued mirror liquor display shelving has a similar effect. The remaining walls are lined in decadent royal green tufted seating groupings and gold framed glass bottle service tables. The exterior patio is a refuge from the visceral interior space. A cozy exterior space with warm lighting and a mixture of painted and exposed brick walls throughout. A timber-clad bar space and floral installation pulling colors from the interior wallcovering offer an ambient open-air nightlife space.
