Approach
As part of the West Davis Street revamp, we wanted to design a mixed use building for future retail and restaurant tenants that was a nod to the West-Texas ‘Marfa Modern’ architecture. We aimed to bring a new building to a historic area that complemented the existing architectural vernacular yet secure its spot in the rapidly changing Oak Cliff neighborhood.
Outcome
The building is a series of volumes, first separated by program, then pushed vertically & horizontally to allow for a short, stack bond brick-clad space sandwiched between two distinct corner stucco volumes with sloped roofs. Materials were kept simple: A blend of black metal, white brick + stucco and natural wood, that was based on the existing neighboring building facades yet gave this building a distinct identity among the others.
